Our Name
In the Old Testament, two letters are found in the very first sentence that, according to Hebrew scholars is simply an article. They do not know what to call it other than that. This "word," spelled simply, Aleph Tav, is made up of the first and the last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The "word" is pronounced “et,” and it is a Hebrew word of unknown meaning. This "word" is found throughout the Old Testament—these first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, have no meaning to the Jew. Not knowing the meaning of this two-letter "word" the Jewish people called it "the word." Without the New Testament this word has no translated meaning at all. In the New Testament, however, we find that in John, we have a clue to the meaning: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) The Word, John tells us, was in the beginning, and it was with God, and it was God. Should you read a Hebrew text in the original language you would find the words,
Bereshit bara Elohim et hashamayim ve’et ha’arets.
This, translate into English is, "In the beginning, created Gods (the word is found here) heaven and earth." In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The first verse in the Bible has exactly seven words, and in the very middle (the fourth word) is Aleph Tav! This discourse could last for pages discussing the interesting elements of this verse, such as seven is the number of completion, the Menorah, found in the Temple, contained seven candlesticks, and the middle candlestick represents Jesus, etc.
In Revelation, we find four times, the Lord Jesus proclaims that He is the Alpha and the Omega. (Rev. 1:8, 1:11, 21:6 and 22:13) Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. More than likely, even though the book of Revelation was penned in Greek, the commerce language of that day, both the speaker (Jesus) and the listener (the Apostle John) spoke the Aramaic language during that vision of the Revelation, meaning Jesus would have said “I am the Aleph and the Tav, the first and the last.”
So we can see that the mysterious word "et" spelled aleph tav, the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, is Jesus.
